미디어미르앤 김은진 기자 | 용인특례시 처인구 원삼면 헌산중학교가 용인 지역 최초로 국제바칼로레아(IB) 월드스쿨 인증을 획득했다.

용인특례시는 3일 헌산중에서 IB 월드스쿨 인증 현판식을 열었다고 밝혔다. 행사에는 이상일 용인특례시장을 비롯해 모경희 학교법인 전인학원 이사장, 김용배 헌산중 교장, 조영민 용인교육지원청 교육장, 학생·학부모 대표 등 70여 명이 참석했다.

현판식은 IB 인증 경과보고, 현판 제막, 학생 선서 순으로 진행됐다.

국제바칼로레아(IB)는 스위스에 본부를 둔 비영리 교육재단 IBO가 운영하는 국제 인증 교육 프로그램이다. 학생 주도 탐구를 기반으로 사고력·창의력·문제해결력 등을 기르는 교육과정으로 알려져 있다.

올해 기준 IB 프로그램은 전 세계 160개국 6000여 개 학교에서 운영되고 있다. 국내 인증 학교는 139개교이며, 경기도는 10개교가 인증을 받아 운영 중이다.

헌산중은 이번 인증을 계기로 학생 중심의 탐구·토론 수업과 국제적 교육과정을 운영한다는 계획이다.

이상일 시장은 축사에서 “용인에서 최초로 IB 월드스쿨 인증을 받은 헌산중 교직원과 학생들에게 축하한다”며 “2024년 IB 관심학교에서 빠른 속도로 인증을 받은 것은 학교 구성원들의 노력 덕분”이라고 말했다.

이 시장은 “IB 월드스쿨 인증은 지식 전달을 넘어 학생 스스로 사고하고 탐구하는 교육으로 나아가는 이정표”라며 “용인 학생들이 글로벌 역량을 갖춘 미래 인재로 성장할 수 있도록 교육 환경 조성에 더 신경 쓰고 지원을 아끼지 않겠다”고 밝혔다.

Heonsan Middle School Becomes Yongin’s First IB World School

Heonsan Middle School in Wonsam-myeon, Cheoin-gu, Yongin Special City, has become the first school in Yongin to obtain International Baccalaureate (IB) World School authorization.

Yongin Special City announced that it held a plaque ceremony on March 3 at Heonsan Middle School to mark the school’s IB World School accreditation. About 70 people attended, including Yongin Mayor Lee Sang-il, Mo Gyeong-hee (chair of the Jeonin Educational Foundation), Principal Kim Yong-bae of Heonsan Middle School, Cho Young-min (superintendent of Yongin Office of Education Support), as well as student and parent representatives.

The ceremony proceeded with a report on the authorization process, the unveiling of the plaque, and a student pledge.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is an internationally recognized education program operated by the IBO, a non-profit educational foundation headquartered in Switzerland. It is known for an inquiry-based approach that helps students develop key competencies such as critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills.

As of this year, IB programs are offered at more than 6,000 schools across 160 countries. In South Korea, 139 schools have been authorized, including 10 in Gyeonggi Province.

With the new authorization, Heonsan Middle School plans to run an internationally oriented curriculum centered on student-led inquiry and discussion-based classes.

In his congratulatory remarks, Mayor Lee said, “I extend my sincere congratulations to the teachers, staff, and students of Heonsan Middle School for becoming Yongin’s first IB World School.” He added, “Achieving World School authorization in a short period after being designated as an IB candidate school in 2024 is the result of the dedicated efforts of the school community.”

Mayor Lee continued, “IB World School authorization is a milestone that goes beyond the delivery of knowledge and advances toward creative education where students think and explore on their own.” He said the city would “pay even closer attention to creating a strong educational environment so that Yongin’s students can grow into future talents with global capabilities,” adding that the city “will not spare its support for education.”
